Tai’s practice explores the relationship between objects, space, and everyday life. Through installation, painting objects, and found materials, he treats artworks not as images but as spatial entities, emphasizing perception, arrangement, and the exhibition as an active, evolving process.

Brushstrokes

Brushstrokes, Acrylic on canvas, gel transfer print, 20 x 20cm x 3 pieces, 2022
Brushstrokes are painted onto the canvas, then replicated through transfer, creating an identical brushstroke. Malevich’s Black Square is appropriated and placed high in a corner of the space — the traditional position of an icon. The primary difference between the two canvases lies in the thickness of the brushstrokes: the replicated image lacks thickness, yet its smooth surface reflects a viewing characteristic of the digital age.

Malevich sought to liberate painting from the framework of representation. In contrast, this work responds to questions of representation and reproduction in painting. By treating the brushstroke as a unique element of the painting medium, the work contemplates the implications of easily replicating this medium-specific feature. It further challenges the assumed necessity of using painting as a creative medium, a notion shaped by the artist's educational environment.
